So you’ve walked the two longest waymarked trails in the UK – the 870-mile Wales Coast Path and the 630-mile South West Coast Path – but what about the bit in the middle?

The Ancient Mariner, Watchet, Somerset

This 120-mile walk from Chepstow (where the Wales Coast Path ends) to Minehead (where the South West Coast Path starts) gives you chance to find out.

You get another opportunity to enjoy the coastal landscape of the Bristol Channel, but without quite so many of the ups and downs of Pembrokeshire, the Heritage Coast and Exmoor.

This varied stretch of coastline will eventually form part of the proposed England Coast Path, but for now you’ll be following existing waymarked routes as much as possible for ease of walking and navigation.

At various stages, you will walk along sections of the Severn Way, the Gordano Round, the River Parrett Trail and the West Somerset Coast Path.

Walks will be split into day sections (to be determined) and the whole route is likely to take between six and eight days.

The England Coast Path is currently in development. The aim is to create a National Trail around the whole of the English coast and one of the longest coastal walking routes in the world.

Update (2018)

In June 2018, considerable progress has been made in developing the England Coast Path, with the section between Brean Down and Minehead now officially open and new access rights negotiated between Weston-super-Mare and Brean. Harri has updated his book to reflect these changes, but it is always advisable to check the England Coast Path website before you set off just in case there are temporary diversions in place.

The England Coast Path: Severn Estuary and Bridgwater Bay (Chepstow to Minehead) by Harri Garrod Roberts is available in Kindle edition from Amazon priced at £1.99.
