The castle at Longtown
The castle at Longtown

The Welsh Marches is a term commonly used to describe those areas of England close to the border with Wales. In medieval times, this region was fiercely contested and heavily militarized. It consequently contains some of the best examples of castles in England or Wales.

The most impressive is undoubtedly that at Goodrich, but there are a number of other smaller but equally interesting castles in the region.

The walks in this book concentrate on the Welsh Marches bordering Gwent.  All eight routes start at, or close to, one of the region’s castles, and each offers an exciting introduction to the area’s history and its natural beauty.

There are routes in the Wye and Monnow valleys, the Forest of Dean, and in the Black Mountains region of Herefordshire. The walks often make use of well-marked trails such as Offa’s Dyke Path and the beautiful Wye Valley Walk, but also venture on to quieter, less well-known tracks and paths.

Walks range from 5.8 miles (9.4 km) to 14.4 miles (23,2 km) in length.

Each walk outline includes historical and natural highlights.
